Feb 5th: Birthday fun

2.5.2012

Sunday morning. It happened to be my 35th birthday. Whoa, mid-thirties here I come. It was an incredible day.

We started with family worship time.

every one with an instrument to 'play' (bang)

For lunch I wanted to invite friends to eat across the street. On the walk there we pass by the motorcycle shops. The sellers warm themselves by fire, though it really was not that cold.

One of our favorite restaurants, with favorite people, Poppy and CC and the JJACK family.

This lady and her friends stopped to marvel at all the foreigners.

Where 'shushu' cooks our food

kids color while we wait and afterwards while the adults talk

we usually miss these kinds of pics, it is always of the little kids....but this is just as priceless.

The restaurant owner's child.

I love this contemplative look on Annabelle. She is adorable.

After lunch and naps we went on an afternoon/evening picnic to a school nearby. We were showing Poppy and CC the places we frequent.

Sadly, this was the first time Tobin had ever crawled on grass.

He really did like it

then we gave him this ball and he held onto it and laid there for over twenty minutes. This was unbelievable. We thought he would be all over the place. Did I mention he is a chill baby (number 3 just has to roll with the punches).

It was a beautiful day. Perfect weather.

Yep, he is still there.

precious.

love this face of excitement???!

David and Soph took a little lap, or almost. She was loving the barefoot run and said: 'I am just enjoying the beautiful breeze God gave us'.

Next we did a little loop while David stayed back and watched Tobin hug his ball, we did not want to mess with his utter contentment. Eventually they joined us.

Behind the track is this pond area.

way way back over my head is the pagoda. We enjoyed chips, PB and J, and carrots for our meal and played the game 'telephone' while lying on the blanket. This was funny with Bella involved!

We headed home to give the kids baths, do gifts, cake, and then fireworks.

CC and Tobin spend some time on the piano.

We block our couches as a pen for Tobin. When we met our friend for dinner who was visiting our town a few nights after this, Sophia aptly described it: 'we have a trap for him'.

That's not my airplane. Recently changed to 'That's not Poppy's airplane'.

Gifts for moi? really? let me guess. I was spot on with the girls gifts: mentos and chocolate.

And a little basket. This is kind of a joke. David knows I love baskets. His policy is 'basket in, basket out'. I work the system a little sometimes.

cute clothes from Poppy and CC. Thank You!

every once in a while we must interlude with this charmer.

He just looked up at Poppy like this for quite a while.

very, very deliciousy, chocolatey cake was involved.

outside for some loud booms. These flowers are beautiful.

their friendship is pretty solid!

I had a splendid birthday. Thanks for all those who sent wishes. So thankful for family and friends and our God who provides it all.

Feb 4th: out and about

2.4.2012
This day involved going to Sophia's school which happened to be open. We decided to check out the scene at the park across the street, stop at the bakery, and then let the girls play for a bit at her school.

First things first. The pleas of the morning: 'may we put on our dresses!'

Ooohhhh....look how it spins!

giving Poppy a tour of the doll house.

Tobin doing his thing.

Poppy and CC arrived just in time for a huge festival of a local minority group here. The festival lasted three days and the town was abuzz with festivities to celebrate. These folks were practicing for the performances going on in the big square across town.

I will mention this again. ALL these pictures are from Poppy. He took almost all of them, and if he didn't they were still with his camera. I love their perspective on China life. He took so many great scenery and 'people' photos that we just don't take anymore. Like this lady eating noodles. Daily life.

At Sophia's school:

this is a good view of the apartment building right near her school.

For lunch we went to our favorite noodle place and also got egg pancakes.

Poppy and CC are game for almost anything. Such troopers.

I had the idea a long time ago to start a series called 'vehicles in China' (I never got around to it, obviously). You would be amazed at the range of vehicles and how they are used. We have seen these kind of bicycles stacked three times as high.

the best of times were the times just hanging out. I love Tobin's expression here.

lots of this too.

And this. Treasuring.

having a little heart to heart.

And lots of music and dancing, singing and fun with CC, the retired music teacher.

In the afternoon David took them to the market to get some things, including fireworks. This was to prepare for my birthday...

pickled peppers, pickled cabbage, pickled chicken feet, pickled anything...snacks at the market.

Night time fun. This is what Poppy is for....
