Hong Kong!

This trip was a whole year in the making. We traveled with some of our best friends and their three kiddos for our first trip to HK Disney.

View from our hotel..It was in a more residential area and very nice.

We used a discount airline and got AMAZINGLY cheap flights, but you pay for every extra bag so each child carried on their own clothes and we paid for one checked bag! They packed toys themselves and I am telling you, my girls nest anywhere and everywhere, no matter how long they stay, they make 'their' space really 'theirs'.

Sophia even brought a little Christmas decor from home:

We all slept in one room and enjoyed the Discovery channel, the top floor breakfast buffet and all day cappuccino! Even Gabrielle had her own space behind Sophia's bed. We all slept well in one room because we were SO. TIRED. every night!

Homemade Ice Cream

Despite his love/hate relationship with the KitchenAide attachment, David has become a master ice cream maker. He has to re-engineer it every time and rig it a bit. But it is well worth it. This was cookies and cream +his homemade vanilla. We had to use up our milk before we left for Hong Kong.
We made Vanilla Bean, and regular vanilla, but finished off the Oreo before we left and saved the other for our upcoming guests.

Grandma Comes to Swing

Had we not known this lady we would have thought we were on candid camera one evening when she came for a visit. (It would have made a good sitcom)
She cannot hear very well. She speaks loud and not very clear. She walks hunched over with a cane. She is visiting her family, a family we are very close to. This Grandma is hilarious and we think she knows it.
She eased her way up our front steps and in our house, we welcomed her as she stopped at every nook and cranie to comment or ask a question.
Her first round of questions was all about money. David answered these with smiles.
Meanwhile our kids' tutor was at our house in the home school room and she was laughing her head off as David entertained Grandma and fielded all her inquiries. Only... the tutor thought that this was a grandpa and that we were wrongly calling her 'grandma'. (we didn't find this out until later, which made it all the funnier).
I started giving the youngers a bath while David let Grandma wander a bit. We tag teamed and I met her back in our home school room where homework was trying to be done.
(Tutor holding back smiles)
Grandma noticed Bella is left-handed. In China, they keep children from becoming left-handed. I thought she was going to scold me for allowing this to go on. Instead she gave two thumbs up to Bella and said it was great!
She leaned low on the table, all in the middle of their work (clearly interfering). And the tutor laughed and said 'let them do their homework'.
We moved on...down the hallway at snail-neck speed. Finally to the bath, she peeked in. David showed her the girls' room, Sophia's loft, etc.
Next she came back to our main door (not the door she came in). I opened it to show her it was just like her son's house. She made some loud agreements and 'Ahas' realizing the mirror image layout. And she closed the door. She was making no effort to leave and we didn't mind, we were being entertained as much as she was.
Finally, she goes back toward the laundry/front yard entry. Out she goes and I missed the best part. David says she walked to the swing, tossed aside her cane, sat with confidence and started swinging like it was something she had done every day of her life. She told David when she was younger they used to swing and swing high.
David comes in to tell us to come see Grandma swinging. We all go out, with camera in hand. The tutor comes as well. Grandma loves it all.
And home she went.

Christmas! Christmas!

We started going all things Christmas and had a blast decorating. We finally bought some lights last year our tree looks fuller. David said he saw some great fresh Christmas trees on the way up the mountain to our project site. But we can't just go cutting down people's trees...
These Coker Fruit Loops in action

How many can I put on the tree at one time?
(She has five in her hand)

Later in the week, Gabrielle found her a good hiding spot.

Our big gift to the family this year is vacation/Christmas budget all toward Hong Kong Disney.
We leave tomorrow! Everyone is so excited. No, we are all not 100% healthy, but we are making it. David may have to take his computer to the morgue and get a new one while there (exchange...etc.) He is currently cloning the hard drive.
We have three full days in HK, two at Disney!!!
And we have already started our Advent Nightly readings since we will be gone the first four nights.
See you on the other side of Disney!

Our Early Thanksgiving

After a bit of deliberation with other ex-pats here we decided to host Thanksgiving a week early, on November 20th. Two Dutch families and two American families (including ours) would attend. This was a joint celebration/prayer time of Thanksgiving and a 'going away' tribute to one of the Dutch families moving home in December.

Of course the prep went on all week. We made pie crusts, made an emergency order for some cream of mushroom soup from the capital, checked the markets for the right kind of mushrooms, and designed the decor. We decided we would do very light Homeschool on Thursday and take all of Friday off from local and homeschool.

The girls, lead by Sophia, made chocolate chip pie 'all by themselves'. She called it the 'made by Sophia and her helper' pie. I kept chiming in, and she grunted and said: "MOMMY, if you keep helping it will NOT be a 'made by Sophia and her helper' pie!!!"
Okay, okay, I backed off in laughter.
Gabrielle sat by for encouragement and cuteness.
Do you already see one pie in the oven? My first ever attempt at Peach Pie.
The fresh peaches here are disgusting, I used canned.

While orange is very much a Thanksgiving color, it was so appropriate that this is also the color of the Netherlands. This dates back to William of Orange....who still has a descendant on the throne.
My friend gave me her Dutch themed tins that used to hold teas and such. David immediately put these  in the knick knack 'dust collecting' category and said 'no, don't get them'. I rebelled with a smile. I love them and used them first for the centerpieces as vases. (later I used them to caddy things on our homsechool table, giving a little European flair).
 We bought fresh flowers.
David borrowed our friend's lawn mower. The motor is his legs.
Sophia later helped with more rolls.
And because I found some avocados in the market, we made some guacamole to go along with ranch dip and raw vegetables. (which were a big hit).

Getting the yard organized....

Our thankful wall of leaves.
The fun begins. I purposely kept it in motion
 sword/gun fights going on inside.
 The meal....
We extended our table. This is one of our favorite pieces of furniture in our whole house.
We sat 14 here:
 Cookies....Coffee...
We had a special prayer time for our departing friends and then on to dessert.

Here she is, one of my favorite people. I will miss her so....
I can't talk about it or I will start crying.

A blessed, blessed Thanksgiving.
The next day we got out our Christmas decorations and had everything up by November 22!
Real Thanksgiving was a blur and we almost forgot about it. It happened to be our date night, the movie 'The Martian' was out in our theater and we went. It was incredible. And in 3D!!!

Outdoor Food Court

We are very thankful for our kids' adventurous spirits when it comes to food. They may not try bee larvae and I am okay with that (neither do I). But an array of noodles, tofu dishes, spicy add-ons, and various forms of rice and unknowns, they look around and find something to try.

One Saturday we went to what we call our 'outdoor food court' and had a great lunch.
This day we also let them have their very own soda, a major treat.

Soph chose this tofu/noodle dish

Bella, these noodles with mystery meat balls and added spice.
We all ate some of these 'japanese rice cakes'

spicy grilled meat for all...
 My own thinner noodles...

Tobin's somewhat bland noodles, but he munched on everything else.
Love this life, this place, this food, this fam. Blessing.

November Blows By

We are not to the end of November yet, but almost. And because I am just now feeling better  I will try to give some glimpses of these days gone by.

David now has serious sinus gunk and what seems to be a bad ear infection. He actually is having real hearing problems because of it.

His computer, by which he does almost all of his work, has died. Died.
It is only a year and a half old. But out of warranty, of course.
(update since I started this post: last night we decided the best option, after consulting many people, contacting Microsoft support, discussing all options of doing out-of-warranty exchange, the best thing to do is to drop the computer, literally. The next morning, David banged it around a bit, much like you do a washing machine on the brink, Gabrielle laughed and yelled: 'Break it! Break it'. Two minutes later the computer woke up from its near-death coma. Not kidding. It may not be fully well, but it is alive, and David is backing it up as we speak.)

(another update since starting and re-starting this post: his computer died again, the banging helped again, but we are so uncertain with it).

My own body and energy is not full speed, but I am so much better than I was. The body's aerobic capacity is amazing. During my half-marathon it was my muscles that couldn't hack going farther, not my lungs. After this lung infection and almost a month of being on the lem, all endurance is gone. I was huffing up one flight of stairs during my sickness. Now, just getting back to a little exercise, I can't swing kettle bells for 4 minutes (with breaks). I am taking it slow, but how quickly my aerobic capacity diminished.

As we say here in China, Man Man Lai (mon, mon lie), take it slow.

And yes, there are a gazillion other 'little' trials that try to arrest our days and leave us squandering for hope.

But we are not squandering, though we do have to keep seeing every little grace instead of every little annoyance. We do have to talk through instead of grumble through such circumstance.
We do have to stay on the Jesus Way, which is not the easy way.
But it is the ONLY truly hopeful way.
And to be honest, some days that is just plain hard.
Not that our actual faith wavers, it doesn't. I believe fully, entirely, completely. The walking it out can become burdensome when I act like Christian before he made it to the foot of the cross and still had the burden weighing him. How often, when weak in body and spirit, I try to pick it back up, as comfort almost because I have 'things to do' and 'must be able to do this' and whatever lie I tell myself....

And how the refreshment comes when I again look to the Cross, look to the LOVE that bore it all and find real rest and contentment no matter how I feel physically.

Let me move on from my cliche wanderings..

Sophia's school assignment was to bring a food plate and show to the class. It wasn't supposed to be this fancy. She designed it herself and had our helper cut the apples.

And the hooligans in the bath with goggles... Gabrielle now knows how to blow bubbles. Well on her way to being a swimmer!

More November coming up...including our early Thanksgiving.
