America 3: Gatortown

Correction: David wanted me to mention that our June adventures on the road that he calculated only took us through less than 3 weeks, which made the travels a bit intense. Then we returned to B-town for 2 days, David and I then left for a weekend getaway, returned for one day and our whole family went to Virginia for a week. And then came July.

But let's back up a bit and rummage through the fun....
At Uncle Herschel's we went out to eat gator tail. Really, we did. The kids liked it.
I had not been back to my home town in 6 years I think. And now the kids are old enough to understand more, so it was fun.

She sat happy at the restaurant.

The next day we went to tour the University of Florida campus. Uncle Herschel works at UF, I was born at the hospital on the campus, spent most of my life around there, and then graduated from there. I bleed orange and blue.
The kids really wanted to see an alligator in the wild. Lake Alice is the place to go for that. Except we didn't see any. This is right on campus and really does have lots of gators. But it must have been too early.

This sign tells about alligators, how/why NOT to feed them, etc.

Uncle Herschel, our tour guide.

And, in order to not disappoint, we went out to Paynes Prairie to see if we could find a gator.
Sure enough there were a few.
This is off the side of the road. There is a retaining wall right there, and a boardwalk out onto the prairie marsh.
Gabrielle is right next to us in the van with the door open.
Sophia is standing in ants, as we soon found out.

The Gator meanwhile cracked a smile for us.

Granddaddy came up from South Florida to hang with us for the weekend.
First stop with him was a local history museum, which the kids really enjoyed.
